Sometimes the sound balance on my iBook gets out of whack. I found a great program that automatically checks and makes sure that it is balanced.
balanced is a program by Stéphane Thiell.
Install it and it runs as a daemon.
Uninstall it in the terminal with:
sudo /Library/StartupItems/balanced/uninstall.sh

This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. SFW and trippy. It’s a picture that keeps zooming in to the center. It seems to never end.
